“Medium”

In art, the word “medium”  has different meanings: it usually refers to the  material of a work (ex. wood, plastic, wool, paper…), but it can also refer to the artistic technique applied on it to create the work. Instead, in the notation of a painting, where there are  written the main information about the work, soon after the name of the author, the title of the work and the date in which it was created, you’ll read some information about the “medium”, which refers, in this case, to both the material and the technique used to create the work. For example, you may find: “oil on canvas”, “tempera on canvas”, “oil and tempera on board”, “ink on board” and so on. In the notation of Sandro Botticelli’s work of art “La nascita di Venere” you’ll read that the medium used by the artist was “tempera on canvas”, while in the notation of “Monna Lisa” (also known as “La Gioconda”) by Leonardo da Vinci, you’ll read “oil on board”.

The word “medium” can also refer to the substance with which colored pigments are mixed to create a paint; in this case, what we are calling medium is also responsible for the fluidity of the paint. In fact, by changing the medium you can change the paint, giving it the desired fluidity, and so, making it thicker or thinner.

Art Techniques

The expression “Art technique” indicates the modality with which a work is created (and also the processes through which the technique is applied to achieve the final work).

img_20190103_235804

My favourite art techniques are: (coloured) pencils, charcoals, pens, texters, graffito and water colours, even though there are lots of other art techniques (that vary between them, according to the artistic field in which they are used).

img_20190104_000413

Sometimes they can also be mixed together to create new techniques; for example, you can mix: pencils (or pens) with watercolors, tempera with  watercolors and many others. Découpage and stencil, that are usually used for making decorations, are part of these mixed techniques.

Some techniques can be used to create different kinds of works, only by changing the way they are applied and the materials to which they are applied to. These techniques are, amongst the others, bleach and inks.
